How to cook Baked Mussels with Garlic and Butter

1

Clean the mussels

Scrub and debeard mussels. Discard cracked shells and any open mussel that does not close when tapped.

2

Steam briefly

Steam for 3–4 minutes, just until shells open. Discard any that remain closed.

3

Make the topping

Combine butter, garlic, breadcrumbs, cheese, parsley, lemon juice, and pepper.

4

Top and bake

Remove the empty half-shells. Spoon topping over each mussel and bake at 220°C (425°F) for 5–7 minutes until golden.

5

Plate

Arrange the mussels in a neat row on a long boat-shaped platter and serve hot.

Maria’s tip: Steam only until the shells open so the mussels stay juicy in the oven.
Food safety: Discard cracked mussels, those that do not close before cooking, and those that remain closed afterward.
